Fishing regulations

Fishing

The Swedish right of public access legislation gives anglers greater freedom than is available in any other country.

Along the whole coastline and on the large lakes Vänern, Vättern, Hjälmaren, Mälaren och Storsjön all fishing with rod and line is free. This has been the case since 1985. Generally speaking some form of permission is required everywhere else. This is done through buying a fishing licence or gaining permission from the particular land owner.

Fish conservation associations usually have good prices for young people under sixteen, including fishing licence discounts and sometimes even free fishing. The some 600 angling clubs scattered around the country can provide you with all the information you need.

Right of public access provides considerable freedom but with certain conditions. Anglers may only catch sufficient fish for their own use, may not sell caught fish, and must show consideration for the countryside.

As part of the work towards developing sustainable fishing and to protect living environments to facilitate biological diversity, we ask you to familiarise yourself with the Sverigefiskekortet conditions and regulations before you cast your line.
